Andrew Hunt drew the four-foot-circle with last stone in the final, winning the 2017 edition of the annual Thistle Integrity Stakes Bonspiel on the Manitoba Curling Tour.
Hunt's Stonewall team defeated William Lyburn's foursome from Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club 5-4 to close out the 16-team triple knockout event. Hunt was supported by Dillon Bednarek, Mitch Einarson, and Kennedy Bird in earning the top prize of $1,300.
Lyburn received $900 as the runner-up. The losing semi-finalists J-T Ryan of Assiniboine Memorial and Tanner Lott of Winnipeg Beach earned $750 each, and quarter-finalists Tyler Drews and Hayden Forrester, both from Fort Rouge, received $550 each.
Butch Mouck’s team from Gilbert Plains won the Thistle Senior Men’s Bonspiel (on Nov 12th), topping the Mark Franklin foursome from the Granite club 6-4 in the final.
Mouck was unbeaten in the bonspiel with five with five straight wins, earning his team of Glen Parrot, Scott Gray, and James Barnett a $1,600 top prize, and a berth in the Strathcona Senior Provincials.
Mouck’s team is the fourth to qualify for the provincials at Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Memorial Club February 21st-26th. They join defending champion Murray Warren of Deloraine, Ray Baker of Dauphin, and Franklin, who earned a berth in the Granite spiel the previous weekend.
Franklin’s runner-up prize was $1,000. Losing semi-finalists Dale Brooks of Hamiota and Alan Fitzmaurice of Brandon earned $800 apiece, while Clyde Kindzierski of Deer Lodge won the consolation event worth $500.
